FCDO Annual Asset Check and Visit: A Closer Look at UK ISAR Operations

May 28, 2025

UK ISAR recently welcomed representatives from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and the National Resilience Centre of Excellence for the annual asset check and an in-depth operational showcase. The visit was hosted by Chief Fire Officer Nick Searle, with special guest Mr. Nick Harvey, Head of Indo-Pacific Humanitarian Response at FCDO, joining the delegation.

As part of the visit, FCDO representatives toured the Known Consignor warehouse, where they observed the logistics and coordination behind UK ISAR’s rapid deployment capability. The delegation also engaged directly with UK ISAR personnel, gaining valuable insight into the operational roles and processes that underpin international humanitarian response.

At the Merseyside Training & Development Centre, a fully operational Reception and Departure Centre (RDC) was set up to demonstrate mobilisation procedures in action. The event featured a series of live demonstrations showcasing the breadth of UK ISAR’s specialist capabilities, including:

  • Drone operations for aerial assessment and situational awareness
  • Canine search and rescue demonstrations on the rubble pile
  • Technical rescue techniques, such as cutting and breaching
  • Timber shoring displays, highlighting structural stabilisation methods

This hands-on experience provided FCDO colleagues with a deeper appreciation of the scale, complexity, and professionalism involved in UK ISAR deployments. The visit also served to reinforce the strong partnership between UK ISAR and FCDO, underscoring a shared commitment to delivering agile, effective, and life-saving international response.

A special thank you to Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, and West Midlands Fire & Rescue Service for providing dedicated personnel in support of the visit. Their contributions were vital in showcasing the depth, collaboration, and operational excellence of the UK ISAR team.ational teams and strategic partners—reinforcing a shared commitment to delivering effective, life-saving responses in international emergencies.
