Volunteer vets have been incorporated into UK ISAR since 2013 due to the INSARAG requirement to be able to medically treat all team members, including the search dogs. These dogs are usually the first team members to enter a work site, putting their lives at risk and facing potential injuries such as lacerations from sharp objects, further structural collapse, or falls from a height. These canine team members are the fastest and most reliable method of finding live victims, so their health and welfare is paramount for the success of the team, and a vet will join UK ISAR on medium and heavy deployments.
