Following an original scoping mission to assess the disaster response capabilities of the Kenyan Disaster Response Unit (now the Disaster Response Battalion) undertaken by INSARAG representatives in July 2014, UK ISAR was requested to conduct a follow up scoping mission.
Although the original mission still holds relevance and provides key recommendations, much has changed since 2014. As such a follow up mission was sanctioned by INSARAG and an official request was made to UK ISAR to undertake the assessment.
The aim of the scoping mission was to conduct a gap analysis of the current USAR capabilities of the two Kenyan based USAR teams.
A full program of activities was produced by Kenyan officials, allowing the appraisal of current equipment and the observation of multiple training scenarios including command support, practical demonstrations, trench collapse, breaking and breaching (wood, metal & concrete),K9 search, Lifting and moving, rope rescue, sub-surface rescue and confined space.
