Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, on behalf of UK ISAR, recently delivered a Basic Navigation Training Course in the stunning surroundings of Glen Doll, located within Cairngorms National Park. This remote and rugged environment provided an ideal backdrop for developing essential navigation skills that are critical to operational readiness.

The course brought together team members from across the UK, offering them a hands-on opportunity to strengthen their capabilities in map reading, compass use, and route planning. Blending theoretical instruction with practical field exercises, the training challenged participants to apply their skills in dynamic, real-world conditions.
Navigating the demanding terrain of Glen Doll—characterised by steep ascents, dense woodland, and rapidly changing weather—participants were immersed in scenarios that mirrored the complexities of real deployment environments. The experience not only reinforced technical competencies but also built confidence, resilience, and effective teamwork under pressure.
Delivered by experienced instructors from Scotland FRS, the course reflects their commitment to supporting UK ISAR’s goal of maintaining the highest standards of preparedness and professional excellence. By facilitating this training, Scotland FRS continues to play a vital role in ensuring that UK ISAR personnel are equipped to respond effectively to emergencies both at home and abroad.
This successful training event highlighted the importance of continual skills development and demonstrated the value of collaboration across regional teams in maintaining the UK’s international search and rescue capability.
