On March 11, 2011, Japan experienced the strongest earthquake in its recorded history. Beginning with the earthquake off the coast of Honshu, it led to a series of large tsunami waves.
Following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake, UK ISAR flew to Japan to help with the rescue where they worked with two American search and rescue teams.
A base of operations was set up at a suitable site close to Ofunato and work got underway as quickly as possible.
Work progressed but was made difficult by the heavy snow and falling temperatures and despite an extensive search of residential and industrial properties, no survivors were found.
